What if?
Hi all,
This may seem like a harsh question, but with all the cloud-based computing today I think this is a very important question. What were to happen if the good folks at Nirvana abandoned (forced or otherwise) Nirvana? What would we all do if our trusted system were to lose integrity and begin falling apart due to lack of support?
Again, I know this seems a bit apocalyptic to consider, but I'm curious to see what kind of backups we're all working with. Frankly, I don't have a backup and the only way I'd be able to recover my information would be to either print out my lists prior to a total collapse, or to start from scratch.

It's a very good question!
I guess the short answer (from my point of view) is that Nirvana is still in beta so theoretically it shouldn't be your trusted system just yet. When it goes live, it will likely have functionality that permits you to create a backup.
It's one of the reasons I am not using Nirvana for my live trusted system. Another is that I can't import tasks and don't have the time to enter everything manually, so my testing is currently limited to dummy data. There are other features I need/want too so a switch is not yet compelling.
A simple import and export feature (e.g. to csv format) would be a good start to let users backup and to enable beta testers to really give the system a thorough workout.

It is a good question.
For me, I am using Nirvana for my live trusted system because, even as a beta, it is far beyond anything else I have found out there (and I have looked a lot!). The reality of it is that if "things didn't work out", I would need to print heads and/or start over on another system, which admittedly, would be a painful process. The thing that gives me "peace of mind" is that the Nirvana team has been the most open/responsive team I have worked with on the GTD-front, and if things went south, I have a sense of confidence that they would work with me to make sure I got what I needed to export my stuff.

I think this is solved by having some good, clear, standards-based export process.

Agreed... as a user of other cloud based services this is what I expect as well. We will be implementing this.

If you are going to have a Cloud based business, you must have a backup and export feature.
I use Nirvana as my full time GTD solution because it's better than anything else out there. The fact that it's in beta does not scare me at all because the Nirvana team just seems like a good bunch of people that I can trust, but it's still the end users responsibility to make sure they back up their data.
:-)
