I've got it all figured out!
Please indulge me as I lay out a full blown conspiracy theory that I've been pondering for a little while now.
Nirvana is actually the web app for Things.
The circumstantial evidence is as follows:
1. Things developers have hinted that they are considering
releasing a Things web app in the future.
2. Things has been working on a secret project called "Project
Troy" for roughly the same amount of time that Nirvana has been in
private beta.
3. No one knows what Project Troy is, but the name implies that it
is one thing disguised as something else for the intention of
invading a new territory (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trojan_Horse)
4. Things has been beta testing their iOS apps with their new cloud
sync service that seems closer than ever to finally launching.
5. Nirvana have been promising us an iPhone app that syncs with the
web app that's been just around the corner for the past few
months.
6. Things is notorious for beta testing the hell our of their
services.
7. Nirvana is beta testing the hell out of their web app.
8. The Nirvana web app and the Things mac app have astonishingly
similar user-interfaces.
If this little scheme turns out to be true, I would see this all playing out as follows. One day in the near future, the trojan horse is finally opened up. The Nirvana web app will be rebranded as the Things web app. At the same time, the Things cloud sync will come out of beta so that the Things iOS apps are automatically in sync with the old Nirvana / new Things web app.
Pretty far fetched, I know, but the Things developers, designers, and marketers are masters of presentation and I can see a savvy tech company pulling something like this off to huge fanfare.
The only chink in this theory is that Things is developed out of Germany and Nirvana is developed out of Canada. That would mean, that the Nirvana team are a satellite development team that is actually based in Canada or that they are actually all fake people created for the guise of Project Troy.
Now back to reality . . . I realize the chances of any of this being true is nil, but DAMN! Wouldn't that be a way to launch your new service!
