Can't reassign task to different project.
Am I correct that once a task is assigned to a project, you can remove from the project without deleting it? Can't I drag it back to a normal status so it's not in the project? I found I CAN drag it to a NEW project... but not back to normal.

You are correct.
This is kinda a bug. This used to work by simply moving the project task into the next list but it confused people.
Some people thought that you could assign your projects next action by dragging it into the Next list and they where surprised to find it was now removed from the project.
Because of this, I assume the prevented the dragging function and Nirvana is currently working on a major overhaul of the Next list on the next major update.

Yes, we are anxiously waiting to a solution for this in the next release. In
the mean time, I guess you have to drag the task back to the Inbox to
"unassign" it to a project. Then you may put it back into Next or Today or
whatever.
