Cost?
Thanks for the invite.
This system is great. One question before i start using it properly, how much will it cost when launched?

Good question. I would like to know also how much it will cost and if you plan on a freemium model.
Support Staff 3 Posted by Christiane Magee on 07 Dec, 2009 07:39 PM
Hello...
Nirvana will most definitely follow the Freemium model and the paid version will provide, for example, but not limited to; https, unlimited projects, file attachments etc... the list of paid features at this point is not 100% engraved in stone.
That said, we suspect the monthly subscription for the premium will be about $5/month and we will offer a discount for people who want to pre-pay for a whole year.
How does that sound to you guys?

I am willing to pay good money for a good product
$5 per month is acceptable for me, but I will go for year sub for sure

Sounds good to me.
Just keep Nirvana simple and add an iPhone app and I am set. I am still waiting on specific features in order to use Nirvana full time.

+1 on keeping it simple. It is very close to perfect for my needs and have actually been able to switch to it full time in recent weeks. Getting too complex and trying to be everything to everyone would be a mistake in my opinion. iPhone app would be nice, though the iPhone webapp has been ok for me

Well I just signed up for a beta account, so I havent actually used Nirvana yet, but if the recomendations are correct I'd be happy to pay for a premium service.

$5 per month?? Why is everyone OK with this? Nirvana's competitors (Remember the Milk, Toodledo, etc.) charge around $15 per year. If the cost of Nirvana is more than $20 per year that is ridiculously overpriced.
12 Posted by jacob on 24 May, 2010 03:30 PM
I agree with Josh, $5 per month would be a horrible price. Toodledo has a $15 per year price and they have all the same functionality, Nirvana just looks nicer.
13 Posted by zdenek on 24 May, 2010 08:20 PM
I have bought a subscription to Toodledo, $15 for year, a few months ago.
Nirvana looks very well. I am willing to pay $15-$20 per year for Nirvana.
But $5 per month is too expensive for me.
14 Posted by jacob on 24 May, 2010 08:41 PM
I couldn't agree more zdenek

$5 a month is NOT too high a price to pay for a quality product that I know I'm going to use the hell out of and rely on daily. This system is a Godsend - the first of many that I actually know I will use. Bravo!
16 Posted by zen on 24 May, 2010 11:52 PM
RTM charges $25/yr. I suspect that at $45 - $60/yr Nirvana will lose a lot of potential users, i.e., non-mavens. The current beta users represent <1% of the total market for Nirvana.
At what price point demand for Nirvana will be relatively high? My guess is $25 - $35/yr.
17 Posted by Josh on 25 May, 2010 12:10 AM
Thank you Zen!! I am astounded that anyone would be excited to pay double the price of comparable services. Nirvana- you gotta stay below $35 or it's going to be a tough sell.
18 Posted by jacob on 25 May, 2010 12:13 AM
I highly disagree that $5 a month is fair. Just think: an application like Things (albeit a somewhat high cost up front) is relatively the same. Paying a continual $5 a month in the long run is a far higher cost.

$15 per year is OK. I live in Eastern Europe, I am not a US citizen.
I would like to use Nirvana and I am willing to pay, but purchasing power of my currency is lower than of $.
20 Posted by nantas on 25 May, 2010 09:58 AM
I'm ok to pay if there's interface to popular calender system like outlook. Currently I have to manually create calender items outside of nirvana to get proper reminder.
21 Posted by Stan on 25 May, 2010 11:40 AM
I'll be happy to pay 15 - 20 EUR or USD per year once a few featured work (esp. recurring tasks, smart lists (not sure)). Make it 25 with many more features (but I can't think of any right now).
I would strongly prefer you charge for the iPhone app. sparately. Maybe 25 USD for the app. I don't have an iPhone, so I don't want to get the feeling of paying a flat fee including something I won't use.
Of course, you could offer a discount for the iPhone app + a 1-yr subscription.
Happy to pay for a BlackBerry app (if you can make the UI work).
Best,
s.

I think it goes without saying that I'd rather pay 25$ a year than 60$. However, I don't agree with everything that's been said against charging 5$ a month.
Now, I'm not saying that Nirvana should charge 5$ a month because obviously many wouldn't be willing to pay that amount for it. And if selling something for half the price means you have three times the customers, then selling it for 50% can make sense. So I'm fine if Nirvana charges less. But I certainly don't think that 5$ a month is a high price for their service. I'd definitely be willing to pay that sum because to me 25$ for RTM is less of a bargain than 60$ for Nirvana.
23 Posted by Josh on 25 May, 2010 09:03 PM
Lasse- It's not a question of what you think it's worth. It's a question of being COMPETITIVE in cost. Double the cost of every other comparable service is simply overpriced. Nirvana is not more than twice as good of a service as Remember the Milk. The only things Nirvana has that Remember the Milk doesn't are:
BUT, guess what- Remember the Milk has things that Nirvana doesn't either:
If you really want to throw away your money you can always send it my way ;)
Sorry folks- $5 per month is flat out unreasonable.
24 Posted by jacob on 25 May, 2010 09:36 PM
amen Josh!
25 Posted by Lasse on 25 May, 2010 09:37 PM
@Josh: You can charge twice the price for a "comparable" service and still be competitive. Apple's a good example. Is a MacBook really worth twice as much as a pc? I doubt it. Yet people are willing to pay that amount. But as I've already mentioned, I'm not saying that Nirvana should charge more than their competitors - and I wouldn't mind if they didn't. I'm just saying that I don't think 5$ a month is too much per se. Whether 5$ is competitive or not is a different matter but I'm not in a position to judge that.
As for RTM vs. Nirvana: To me the most important things Nirvana offers that RTM doesn't are a real GTD setup and manual ordering of tasks. Plus a more convenient way to filter by tags, drag and drop, etc.
And if I really wanted to throw away my money I'd buy my wife a new pair of shoes! :)

Hello everyone... we love the fact that people are passionate about the potential cost for Nirvana - and that a discussion is happening between users on both sides of the fence.
A couple of things I want to mention...
(a) no one will be forced to pay anything. There will always be a free account available. So your choice if you want to pay for the premium account or not.
(b) if you do chose to go on the Premium Plan and it's not for you, you can always downgrade. We aren't forcing you into a contract. You can easily upgrade again in the future.
(c) Nirvana features will be growing and growing over time. Do not feel compelled to pay for missing features you know you want and need. Once your must-have features are launched and you see those features as adding value to you, then, by all means, subscribe for the Premium Plan.
(d) Not all software/apps are for everyone. We are okay with that. We are well aware there are lots of ToDo apps out there. Nirvana will fulfill some people's needs because they already paid someone else $25 for a service that didn't work for them, so a bump in price won't bother them as, in their minds, they are getting something that completely works for them and that's worth the price difference. For those who are so-so on Nirvana... that's fine! Again... we are okay with that.
@Lasse... I need some new sandals. So if you have that extra cash hanging around....
thanks for the discussion guys.

Christiane-
Can you tell us which features will require a premium account? I am most interested in mobile access and access through future iPhone and Android apps since that is the feature that tends to force users of other online services to upgrade to the pay account. Some examples of this are Remember the Milk, GrooveShark, LastPass, etc.
Support Staff 28 Posted by Christiane Magee on 27 May, 2010 01:13 PM
Hi Josh,
The complete feature set is to be determined still. Once we have the plans laid out we will let everyone know. Some examples of features available to premium, however, will be SSL, unlimited projects, and file attachments (when we launch that feature).
FREE and paid will both have access to the desktop web app and the mobile web app. We wouldn't restrict device access. Native mobile apps will most likely cost money to purchase, but that would be at the discretion of the 3rd party developers.
hope this gives you an idea.
Cheers,
C

$60 too much, $20-30 ok.
