Nirvana is looking good

I have been coming in and out of Nirvana for some time now, but not as much as I did in the past. The reason was due to the fact that Nirvana was missing some key features that would not allow me to use it as my full time GTD system.

With the latest updates such as SSL and email forward to in-box, I feel that Nirvana is finally moving forward and getting some critical feature in place to make it useful for my personal and professional use.

Point black is that I could not risk adding task to a system that was not secure. Emails make up 90% of where my work related task come from and I needed a quick way to get them into my GTD System as task.

The next critical areas are:

Must Have:
1. Areas of Focus
2. Multiple Context selection
3. iPhone app.
4. Reminders SMS/Push Notification

Important:
5. Attachments support
6. Recurring Task
7. Import/Export to CVS, XML, etc.
8. Backups in case of system failure
9. Better Search with real time filtering of task.

Although I have other features that I would like to see improved or implemented with time, the Must have list is vital. With the Areas of Focus alone, I could probably move over full time to Nirvana.

With this said, I want to point out some things that are in place that I really appreciate or like very much.

  1. SSL Security
  2. Email Forwarding to in-box
  3. Project view has jump list to the number of task and takes you to the project when clicked.
  4. In Project view you can jump to the active project from the Project list.
  5. Due date tag is functional and allows you to change the date without opening the task
  6. Three levels of detail in viewing task that allow you to see the contents without opening the task.
  7. Active Projects and Inactive Projects are implemented very well.
  8. The jump list on the right of the task are extremely well done.
  9. Due dates for task have the added flexibility of choosing when to show up in the Today view.
  10. Task with Due dates automatically show up in Today view on the day they are due.
  11. The ability to Include task in the Today view, while inside the Next view.
  12. The ability to include Projects in the Next view.
  13. The ability to quickly filter task with Due Dates in any View.
  14. The ability to add contacts with emails on your Waiting for view for delegation.

How is that for pointing out what's great about Nirvana today and why I am excited about Nirvana's potential.

Nirvana Team: You are so close to becoming the best on-line GTD service around. Keep up the good work and keep us posted on the current development. I am still waiting on "Areas of Focus" to make the final move, but you guys deserve our appreciation for what you have in place today. SSL and Email forward was a HUGE update and has me excited about further development.

Besides all of this, you guys simply have the best Company name for GTD.

Thank you Nirvana team for the hard work.

NOW GIVE ME MY AREAS OF FOCUS ALREADY :-)

i would put 6. and 8. in the must have category... especially recurring tasks...

im with the rest... if the nirvana team keeps up the pace and delivers everything then it will be the gtd app to rule them all ;)

btw... if you, the nirvana team, need any inspiration... go give a look at The Hit List for mac... thats the best gtd app around right now... you can really learn something...

there are 3 reasons i dont want to use it anymore though... noncommunicative dev, an iphone app that has been promised for a year now and it being tied to my mac...

if im putting money on something i want to at least have a general idea of whats happening, regular updates and promised features delivered...

so please nirvana team... keep up the good work and be my next THL without being my next THL ;)

Nirvana team. Please look at The Hit List as smarow suggested.

I think having Areas of Focus work as Tabs would be AMAZING. It would be like running different versions of Nirvana and being able to switch between them easily.

My tabs would be [Work] [Personal] [Business] [Blog]

This will be a great way to implement Areas of Focus with each having an assigned color so you know where you are at all times. Just a thought.

Wow, thanks for the kind words of encouragement. You can imagine, we're used to hearing about the things that are wrong or missing. (not that we're complaining. any feedback is good feedback -- heaven forbid we had no feedback!)

    Anyhoo, batteries recharged.
Now if I could just clone myself to get things done faster...

    Elbert,

Everyone needs to be reminded of their good work. It motivates us to continue what we started. Nirvana is well implemented so far and you seem to know the main issues and request people want.

    Keep up the good work.

P.S. I am experimenting with using Nirvana full time using context only as Areas. :-)

+1 on keeping the good work. As Proximo I have some essentials missing but man: this is a nice app! I can't wait.

And for the matter as a bilingual Dutchmen I can help with the localization. Just let me know.

Thanks Jos... don't think we have any Dutchmen signed up on our translation volunteer list yet, so consider yourself added!

When can I start. I am a GTD coach here in The Netherlands and the language is a constant issue with my coachees/trainees.

I would love to be the first to offer a localized language version to them. I understand that there are functionality issues like date/time format, week starting day, etc. Language is the biggest barrier.

Nirvana would be the first. It would give you a killer advantage over all the other web apps.

So let the translation files come. I do not mind to review these a couple of times in order to keep up with the development of Nirvana.

If only Elbert and his team would give me date stamping.....

Re: Internationalization -- We're looking into a few online translation apps. Not auto-translate, but sort of a wiki-style collaborative engine that will allow language "tokens" to be translated and compiled into any number of language packs. It's on our list of things to get to shortly. Not super happy with anything we've found so far (being the UI-freaks that we are), but there are a number of perfectly functional tools out there.

    Pootle, Glotpress...

I've done some translations before. The big developers seem to think that the Dutch language domain is too small to worry about. We're 16 million in The Netherlands and then there is Indonesia, half of South Africa, Suriname and the Antilles Islands and some pockets of immigrants in the US, Canada and Australia and New Zealand.

I will look into these tools tomorrow. It cannot be too much to translate. There is a Dutch translation of David Allen's book for reference as far as the terminology goes. Help files and knowledge base can be pre-translated by the google translation tool and only need minor clean up in my experience.

So just get me going. I can then promote Nirvana to my coachees.

Looked at both Pootle and Glotpress. Pootle seems to have been around longer. Whatever you choose will work for me.

I also looked at the amount of translation involved. Judging by the screens I have seen, it is not such a massive job as it may seem.

I am eager to get started. Maybe get me a "sandbox" to make the Dutch translation?

    +1 on #8 Backup solution.

Now that I've invested a few weeks on Nirvana, I am slowly starting to depend on it, which is great, but makes me greatly nervous too since I have no control over the state of the data that sits in it. Therefore, I would heartily recommend elevating that feature request (local backup option) to a Must have.

    Thanks!
