Would like to be able to turn a task into a project (idea of sub-projects)

I work on several multi-faceted projects which often start with a task list of single items but those single items occasionally need to turn into projects. This has applications for students as well. If a student's project is to successfully complete a degree program, then you might want them to enter in all the courses they need to complete in that degree program as tasks. They are sitting there as place holders until the student actually gets ready for that class then each class turns into a project with assignments and activities underneath it as separate tasks. I could just create a separate project when I get to it, but having the projects nested would let me get a better sense of accomplishment over time.

    Kara,

This has been discussed by several people on the forums. There are some improvements being made to Projects but I am not sure how and if sub-projects will be implemented at this point. It's on the chopping block for sure.

    Hi Kara...

thanks for your feedback. We are unsure about Sub-Projects/Nested Projects at this time. We will need to get more feedback from people to see what the ultimate solution maybe. Sounds like you could use a Folder where you could organize these projects.

One thing I want to point out is that a Task can easily be converted into a Project (not sure if you knew). Simply drag a task onto the PROJECTS icon in the left navi and it'll be transformed into a project. This could be a potential work around for you.

One thing I do in my Nirvana is I prepend all my project names with Client name - so, for example, Nirvana: Themes or Nirvana: Newsletters. This helps me to visually group my projects. As well, I add the tag nirvana to all my Nirvana projects and tasks (tasks in projects will, in the future, inherit it's project's tags so this added step won't be necessary). This way, I can filter down and see tasks across multiple projects.

Another tip (which again, I'm not sure if you knew about it) is that you can create inline checklists within the task notes area. Check it out: http://blog.nirvanahq.com/2010/03/02/new-feature-inline-checklists/

I hope these current tips will help while we mull over how we can integrate sub-projects without cluttering Nirvana!

    thanks,
    C

HA! ooops. Shall I say "container"? "Task/Project Receptacle"?

    kidding aside... duly noted :)

    Hi,

I second the wish for sub projects.

I usually have about ten active work-projects. And within every work-project I have a lot of tasks that have a lot of steps in them.
If I make a Nirvana-project of every task then the project list will be to long.

I'm struggling with this as well. I am relatively new to "GTD" strategy, but I've been "getting things done" for many many years, always looking for a product/strategy that will help me manage the seemingly endless number of topics in my brain at all times. I like GTD, and one of the things I like about it is that it encourages keeping in focus the "why" of everything you're doing. I want to be able to set an Area of Focus for each of the "higher goals" I keep in mind during all my tasks, and I'm finding that as I am trying to fit everything into Nirvana (new user), I keep wishing for sub-projects, in order to keep things tied together and under the appropriate goal (and sometimes sub-goal).

I think the best workaround right now is to prefix projects or tasks with the same name as Christiane mentioned, but honestly, I have so many, it would be a real time saver, and much more visually simple, to just drag tasks into sub-projects and not have to rename every single task with a pre-fix at the time.

Additional suggestions from more seasoned GTD users welcome. Thanks!

I would like to manage my clients deadlines, and each one has many projects. I currently use TaskCoach out of the many options because it has great support for sub-tasks. Please add sub-task functionality.

Anyone used MyLife Organised? Unlimited, extremely simple tree structure for projects, subtasks, ad infinum. Really great , hope it gets implemented here.

I am also very interested in seeing sub-projects. I am comparing nirvana to my tiddlyspot GTD web app and a lack of sub-projects (in addition to a lack of "repeat every X days" functionality) is keeping me from switching.

    Hope this is helpful.

I am on the quest for the perfect time management tool (and am wasting tons of time searching for it!). Anyhoo - seems like Nirvana is close, so very close to becoming said name and yet, Dan.jacobsen got it right.

Nirvana would be as close to perfection as possible if it had the subprojects and yes repeat!

Please add these two very important tools. Until then, my journey continues.... (I will stop back though in the future for updates though because Nirvana is really, really awesome otherwise!). But I need the repeat to remember mundane yet important stuff like call my grandma every two weeks!

    Thanks!

Thanks everyone for your votes for subprojects. Repeat/recurring is super important and a must... agreed. It's being worked on.

    thanks

    Mod+ on the sub-projects idea.

For now I'm using #name tags to note a subproject. True sub-projects would be a little less clumsy.
