Bring back Project tasks in 'Next' list

Morning - well, it is on this side of the Atlantic :-),

As is everyone else, I'm experimenting with the new UI. One thing I've really noticed, and is causing me problems, is the fact that you've removed the ability to see individual project tasks directly in the Next list.

When I viewed the next list, I would go there to filter down the list of tasks that I could perform at a given moment, as per GTD. However, since only the projects are listed there now, and not the tasks, I can't get a comprehensive list of everything with a specific tag/context.

Example: I have a couple of projects that are home based - so they are tagged as @home. However, there are tasks within these projects that are errands, and so are tagged as @errands.

When I filter my 'Next' list to show me @errands, those tasks within the Project are not shown to me - and I can't see them unless I drill-down into the individual projects.

Please bring back the option to see tasks, not projects, in the Next list!

P.S. Just a minor point - I appreciate that your down-time yesterday was due to the upgrade, and was relatively short. However, it came slap bang in the middle of the working day over here in the UK. Next time, if you could give some warning before the event, it would help us to prepare for an hour or so without our task list!

I totally agree - this is a MAJOR backwards step.

Yes there are some nice new tweaks - but this change has made Nirvana unusable for me - a great shame - I thought all the suggestions around the 'next actions' stuff had been taken on board, but it seems the opposite has happened!

    Very disappointed

I'm with you. I used the Next list to get an overview of all the upcoming tasks I need to focus on and to help me prioritize my tasks. Now that I can't see the next few tasks in each project, I have to go to each and every active project I have. It's a huge backwards step in productivity as I'm having to spend more time determining the next things I need to do.
I'm wondering if this was an unintended change though. It doesn't make any sense what-so-ever to just list your active projects in the Next list. You can already see them in the side bar. I'm thinking they messed up.

    +1 on this.

Before it was really simple to easily filter relevant tasks witj one click of mouse. Now I must enter easch project which is really awful.

Agreed....there has been significant conversation on this...I am confident there will be some changes...just not sure when.

I love the "projects" interface, but it makes it difficult when I can't see the individual tasks I need to be doing without clicking on each project individually. I like to use the "projects" to guide the creation and organization of tasks, but once they're created, I'd like to be able to just do them!

Yes, major faux pas with that one. There was logic behind it, but not very good logic if you ask me.

That issue and the Later list are discussed heavily in this thread which you will probably want to peruse:..

Thanks for the very quick turnaround! (So quick there's actually a typo: it says "projects + subasks," rather than "projects and subtasks." Just so you know!)

Thank's Elbert! As I posted in another thread, I'll give the other improvements an honest test drive now that I can see what I'm doing again!

Just fixed a bug where the filtering wasn't fully "resetting" between clicks... meaning that each click on a "tag" was filtering on the previous filter, rather than always filtering on the complete list.

This fixes global filtering on Next view as well as items in the Tag Cloud.

    Refresh them browsers!
(sorry we're having so many changes today on-the-fly...)

    Elbert,

Thanks for the quick turn-around! However, your last fix (filtering not 'fully' resetting) is only working on tasks that have no project.

If you filter on a tag, then the Next screen reflects all tasks with that tag, including tasks within projects. If you then revert to show all, then the Next screen only shows all tasks within projects that were shown in the first filter

E.G. I have 4 projects, and only two of them contain @work tasks. I filter on @work, and the Next screen shows me those tasks within those 2 projects that match. I then revert to show All. The screen refreshes, but only shows me tasks within the 2 projects that contained @work tasks. The 2 other projects are completely hidden until you refresh the page.

Not sure if this is a related bug but when in the 'Next' view with no filters applied I can see all single action tasks as well as project based Next Actions (nice).
I then filter by energy to see low energy tasks but then when I go back to seeing 'all' on the Energy sub-menu I no longer see the Project tasks.
A page refresh brings them back.
    Anyone else see this?

Yep...I do see some of the project tasks, but a majority are not showing up.

Ouch- sorry guys. Put in the fix but forgot to deploy to production before leaving for the weekend. Refresh and let us know if it's still wonky. Looks ok from this side of the pond. :-)

@don - if you aren't seeing your project next actions in Next, go to your user preferences (top navi > your name > preferences) and turn on Next View > Show Project Tasks.

    Cheers,

    Elbert:

I have the Next View settings configured to Show Today Task and Show Project Task.

The Today task are migrating to Next but the Project tasks are not.

If I star a project task "today" it migrates, but un-starred do not.

It's working for me now. I had to change my selection to hide project tasks, save changes and then go back in and select show project tasks and save changes. After I did this they showed up.
