The Unified Next List - again...
@Elbert, Christiane, Touille and the rest: First off, let me say that now that I've worked with the newest incarnation of Nirvana for several weeks, I absolutely love the new features. And yes, that includes the infamous Later list - call me a GTD-pagan if you wish! :). Nirvana was fantastic before the update and the last changes have made using the app even better.
However, there is one thing that really breaks my workflow, and that is having to go through all my projects during my daily review because I don't have my project NAs in my Next list. Since no other feature has been discussed in these forums as much as the Next list, you're obviously well aware of the desire for the so-called Unified Next List. The reason I'm opening a new thread about it is simply to say that I'd rather have a single-feature update (i.e. the UNL) sooner than a multiple-feature update (that includes repeating tasks, for example) later. I can make do without recurring tasks (especially now that there's the Scheduled list) and other nice features for a while, but could really, really use the UNL. In fact, in my opinion it's the single most important missing feature and the greatest improvement that could be made.
Now, I don't intend to add any pressure. I think that the speed at which you're improving Nirvana is phenomenal! So if you're still working on this feature and it's just taking some time, then forget what you've just read (except for the praise, of course). But if it's already possible to add some kind of UNL to Nirvana, and you're only waiting to finish other features so you can release them as a whole package, then I'd rather not wait for the other features to be done. If the next release included nothing but the possibility to add my project NAs to a single Next list (like the Today list), I'd still be beyond myself with excitement! So just shove the UNL out of the door! :)

I agree 100% with this GTD-Pagan.
+10
PS. Just kidding about the Pagan part. Lasse is awesome.

You get a real consensus here!

@Proximo: :-)
Thanks and dito! :)

As a new user (only ever used the new UI) I love the whole concept of nirvana and really want to adopt it fully but I am finding the lack of unified next list a real roadblock. Find myself checking every evening just to see if a latest release has fixed this little issue. Tried to use the today list workaround but I just get lost!
Strongly agree that a quick update to fix this would be great, as you've got a great system that I just what to start using full time. All the other suggested improvements are great and would make everything better but please just tweak the next list please.

Elbert mentioned on a different discussion that the Unified Next List is almost ready and it's part of the next new release to include a public API.
Woohoo

@ Proximo - and I am sorry if this horse is beaten elsewhere (haven't checked in on the forum lately)- but does the UNL that is coming out support parallel & sequential next actions from projects to the UNL?

Also agreed. I would have to say that recurring items and the Next list are a tie for my most anticipated features. Very much looking forward to it, and agree with Lasse that I would rather see the update on this sooner than later. Thanks for all the great work!

@Jake,
We have discussed parallel and sequential task as part of the Unified Next List, so I can only assume that this will be implemented with the upgrade.
I can't think of how the UNL would work without this ability in place.
Let's hope they are implementing what we have described many times on these forums. :-)

I agree 100% with Lasse's post (including all the nice things he said). Unified-next-list is crucial - but then again it should just be the Next-Action-List and include next actions for the project. Any response from Nirvana on ETA?

@ari - we are working as fast as we can on this!
@all - Here's the deal. We are currently maintaining two versions of Nirvana. One is what you currently see when you log in, the other is built on top of the (soon to be public) nirvana api. The unified next list has been implemented on the new api branch, and while we've tried to implement it on the existing live branch, we keep coming back to the conclusion that our time is better spent focusing on just the new api branch. Trying to keep the old branch up to date with all of the latest fixes means twice the work, double the time, and it delays the api branch from seeing the light of day.
I wish I could promise that the new api branch will be live next week, but I won't (though miracles do sometimes happen...)
We're close, but we need to make sure things are stable. Our last major release went out prematurely, and we are still reeling from the after shocks. Hoping not to repeat that experience again!

Thanks for the update Elbert.
Take your time and make sure it's solid. I give you two more days.....

Great to hear that, Elbert. Thanks a lot.

Thanks for the info Elbert. I know the perils of software development all
too well. I really like the agile/lean approach you take. Just make sure
that when releasing fast and often that internal quality is the top level
feature and then prioritize the rest of the features ;-).
