Add new tasks at the top of the list instead of at the bottom
When you add a new task, it is placed at the bottom of the list in which you are working. Personally I would prefer it if new items were placed at the top of the list (and additionally, that items in any of the lists that are marked as Today, are automatically moved to the top of the list in which they originate from).
Say for instance that each new task receives a time stamp that one would see if one tried to edit an item, then the user could choose whether to place a new item at the top or the bottom of a list based on the time stamp.

+1 on both putting new tasks at the top of the list.

+1 on both.
It's nice when adding multiple task, to see the list of the most recent entries on top. You can always arrange them later, but it's nice to have them on top just in case you missed something or had a double entry of a thought.
It's also nice to have the task go to the top when you mark them for "Today". The today list is a focused list showing only what you are to do that day, but when looking at the "Next" list, it would be nice to have the committed items on the top automatically.

This also applies when you move tasks between any lists. And this is most apparent when moving actions from the Today list into the Next list.
Let me give you a use case scenario: You have a number of actions without project associations. You also have a number of projects with actions assigned to them. If I were to move an action from the Today list into the Next list (an action that does not have any project association), it will be placed at the bottom of the actions without project association. Now, the reason why I moved something from the Today list, may be time constraints, a re-ordering of priorities or what have you but probably, the action is still of high importance to me. So my next step would be to switch from the Today list and go into the Next list. If the action was automatically placed at the top, I could easily decide where in the Next list to put it after that. But with the current configuration, it will be placed at the bottom of the actions without project association, but above all the projects. Therefore it is more cumbersome for me to locate it and decide what to do with that action.
The fact that projects divide the action lists is also a problem because if I have an action associated with a project (provided that new items will be added at the top), and move it to the Next list from Today, it would end up at the top of its project but not at the top of the list. This, again, is one of the reasons I would like to have project names displayed directly on the action the way that it is done in the Today list. If you need to have actions divided into projects, you can simply click directly on the active projects.

Hi all... this is another feature topic that many people are sitting on the fence on. We have the "Task On Top" crowd, and the "Task on Bottom" crowd and there seems to be a stalemate. Clearly those who have lots of tasks, I understand 100% why new tasks being placed at the bottom of the list can be cumbersome.
We are going to set a general preference (i.e. New Tasks: √ place on top or √ place on bottom) and one user made a great suggestion that we are planning on implementing using shortcuts: "N" places on top "n" places on bottom.
We'll update this post when this issue gets a preference.

Great solution, Christiane. Looking forward to that one. I'm definitely a new-task-on-top person.

+1 on New Tasks on Top of list and/or making it a preference

+1 for me on this.
Sorry to say, but I HATE the new task on bottom.

+1 for both the "N" and "n" shortcuts and also "New Tasks: √ place on top or √ place on bottom" :-)

Perhaps a toggle useful on each entry would work. That is how the Nozbe.com folks handled the "debate". Nozbe has the "magic arrow" by which the user decides where the next task lands. It's been a good solution for my purposes.

The "magic arrow" sounds GREAT. That would work for me!

+1 for any way or fashion to put new tasks on top!

thanks guys... putting this up for suggestion to the team again :)

No offense to the "magic arrow" fans, but that wouldn't work well for me. I would definitely rather see it as an option in preferences. I don't want to have to hit a button to choose where it goes every single time I enter a new task. Oy!
I think the "N" and "n" option is great for the shortcuts, though!

I agree with dawn831. The "magic arrow" would not do it for me. The user preference solution is the way to go I believe. That being said, I believe that the "magic arrow" as well as "n" and "N" would be good additional options but the user preference solution is the most important one for me.

I'm not a Nozbe apologist. In fact I like Nirvana's UI and appearance better in many respects. That said, I am a current (albeit less than two months) subscriber/user of Nozbe's. Neither UI provides a quick means to reorder tasks, so if I have a long list of tasks in a view I have to drag them to where ever I want them. Most of the time I want new single tasks entered at the top of the stack, because I want it staring me in the face. Building the steps of a project, however, I usually think through it beginning to end. In that instance I might like each step to land below the previously entered one.
Considering those scenarios, I find if convenient to make one mouse click next to the "New Task" quick entry line as I'm entering the new task rather than having to click through the menus to a preferences screen to change a preference. Nozbe's "arrow" IS a preference. It is a small, "bent" arrow symbol (like the "enter" or "line return" icon on some keyboards) at the left end of the quick entry box. If it points up, new tasks land on top. If I don't touch it, it stays there time after time. Then when "build" a project and want them to add to the bottom, I click it down and the new task adds to the bottom. It stays there until I click it again.
That's my two cents worth as a user of one and experimenter with the other (Nirvana).

Here is what I want with the ability to also multi-select task.

Another idea: When creating a new task, hiting Enter puts the task at the top and Ctrl+Enter puts it at the bottom.

Excuse the bad English in my screen shot. I was trying to get out the door and did not proof read it.
Me make mistake, no like.
I also want to mention that shortcut keys are great but it should not be the only choice. New adopters would not know these shortcuts at first and Nirvana should be easy enough for anyone to pick up and run with.
I recommend that the UI has some sort of trigger like Neflix that let's you quickly get a task to the top even if you did not know the shortcut.
What if I am eating a Donut in the morning and using Nirvana with one hand and a mouse. I don't want to put my Donut down to do things because the UI does not allow me.
Just saying.

Bravo, Proximo!! That's a most excellent idea and way better! You're absolutely correct about the arrow being too obscure for new users. I had to inquire of the developer if or how I could accomplish this. He told me about the arrow. (He hasn't put much thought or effort into Help or FAQ.) Thank you for the idea. I hope it's implemented!

thanks again everyone for your thoughts on this. We will be addressing this soon.
@vanceawalker, we will be making a more comprehensive How To for new users... we know this needs to be improved!
thanks,

+1 task-on-top for me!
23 Posted by Michael Durland on 06 Aug, 2010 12:36 AM
+1 for new tasks on top. It sounds like this option will be coming, which will be awesome.
I use Michael Linenberger's Total Workday Control approach to GTD at work using Outlook and have been searching for a web solution to use at home for my personal tasks where I don't have Outlook. In the TWC system, new tasks must go at the top so that older tasks get pushed down. Basically fresh/new tasks get more visibility this way, and older incomplete tasks fall off the screen. The older a task gets, the less important it becomes. I would love to see a full TWC system, and so far it looks like Nirvana is well on its way to being able to support that.
Thanks,
long time Toodledo user searching for something better.

Just posting this to let Proximo know that I'm still alive. ; -)
Actually, I was thinking about this today. Can someone shed some light on what the status of this is? I'd love to be able to have new tasks on top and Christiane DID say way back in March that this was going to be a setting in General Settings.
Buehler?

@Glenn
I have not heard from Christiane in a very long time. I know the Nirvana Staff is busy with getting Nirvana 2.0 out of Preview stage, but nobody really knows when to expect all the changes.

+1 new-tasks-on +1 tasks-due-today on top.
Any news on this feature?
Christieane's suggestion of having an option as well as N/n short cut keys is a very good solution to this.

Any updates on this request? This is one of my most irritating things (along with the lack of email alerts). There are many people waiting on this one!
28 Posted by rfo on 16 Dec, 2011 01:44 PM
I hope this feature is in the works. This continues to be an irritant for me on a daily/hourly basis. It would seem having a command to quick add to the top of a list should not be too hard (vs. some of the other options presented which I like, but may take more development time).
