Support file links just like you do http links
As others have pointed out tasks often involve files and they have requested the ability to attach files to tasks. I support that suggestion, but this is a related suggestion that is also necessary.
When I add an http URL to the notes of the task that turns into a clickable link to take me to that website. That does not happen for file URL links. The file URL link is just displayed as text.
It would be very beneficial to link to local files.

Thanks, + 1. I've used other apps with this capability (e.g., Circus Ponies Notebook) and I love it!

This is great when using Dropbox

How do you link to a local file in a browser-based system that can be accessed from any PC (or smartphone)? File attachments can be stored on the server and easily accessed from anywhere, but allowing local file links seems to be counter-productive and contrary to the design intent of Nirvana.

It would definitely be problematic, linking to a local file in a web service that can be accessed from anywhere.
This is why we need an Evernote connection, instead! :)

I am not asking for the ability to get to a local file from anywhere on the web. For most of us we use it on one computer and getting to its local files is not really a problem.
All that I am asking for is that if it finds what looks like a file URL in the notes field of a task, when it is rendering the notes that it surrounds that link with the appropriate html tags to make that link clickable. It already does this for http links, all I ask is that it does this for file links as well. The change probably only involves changing a regular expression.
The fact that clicking that link will not work in all browsers and envrionments is not really an issue. As the person that is entering the note that would be my problem.
I am not saying this is a replacement for file attachments or Evernote connections. Even if I had those I would still want this ability.

@dale king -- great idea.
i believe we are currently pattern matching on http:// https:// and mailto: only.
should probably just simplify to :// and mailto:
that way feed:// message:// file:// ftp:// ssh:// or whatever will all be clickable.

@haeffb - true. but I think anyone sophisticated enough to enter "urls" like ssh://***@domain.foo:port would understand that it won't work on every device.
@mark - yes yes... we need to take a look at how we'd do evernote integration. i'm a bit of a multi-window + keyboard ninja, so flipping between apps and copy/pasting urls into n2 task notes doesn't really slow me down, but for sure it would be helpful for a lot of people. of course if nirvana were to undertake integrating with all of the cloud apps I personally rely on (google apps, 37signals apps, freshbooks, etc) we'd be integrating until google gets bought out by facebook. but i digress... i think evernote is an exception in that it really is hard to beat as a reference extension to any GTD workflow.

There are a couple of interesting and useful Evernote integrations with other GTD/to-do programs. One is with Nozbe ... one of the few things I liked about that service, I have to say. Another is with a service called reQall. I think both might be worth a look.

@Mark
I would LOVE Nirvana to tie into the awesomeness of Evernote.

@Elbert
agree to have all of the schemes you mentioned as clickable ones
what is preventing the team to code this? complexity? doesn't look like something complex.
This would also become a first (simple, I know) way to integrate Evernote (and others) into N2 via linking
Big +1!
