New dropdown menus in Nirvana - yey or ney?
A lot of buttons got re-ordered and put into drop down menus. For me its harder to use than before, a step backwards
do you like the new menus in 171?

Early days for me yet but immediate reaction is there's more clicks required than previous version.
Like the option of doing AoF and Context by drop down OR typed though - nice. Needs a few tweeks mind - e.g. no longer finds a context on any wildcard I now have to type the beginning of the context, not just any part of it.

We were trying to reduce the height of the right-click menu, but I'm totally open to bringing the contexts back up a level. Thought we'd try it and see what people thought.
@kenny - we actually had a lot of feedback against wildcard matching on the type-ahead. I guess folks got used to it over time. I'm pretty much 50/50 on this.
Anyone else care to chime in?

@Elbert - yeah I remember the threads, interesting to see what people say.....I guess if people have contexts that repeat common sets of characters in each the old wildcard style could be a problem.

Hmm...I actually like the new drop-down menus. It is more clicks, but I still like it.

My input:
I don't know what N2 looked like before, but compared to N1:
In N1, you can TAb through all the fields, including the all important Schedule and Due, whereas in N2 you can't access any of those fields (and others) via keyboard. I think that's a step backwards for us people who like to use the mouse as little as possible.
Also, it took me like 2 minutes to find where "Schedule" had gone. Putting it under the "Next" drop-down is not intuitive and definitely makes it an extra click. New users may not even find it. Even if you do keep the current general layout (which looks nice), you still have plenty of vertical real estate to add more fields for "Scheduled" and maybe "repeating".
My 2 cents,
A.

I agree with David - I like the new menus despite the increased 'clickage'.
As for type-ahead, I prefer wildcard search i have to say.
My tuppence worth

+1 for going back (or providing option via preferences) to wildcard search.

I'm fine with the new drop-down menus -- a clean UI is good! --but I think the ability for wildcard searching is essential.
On a different UI topic, I really hope you'll consider returning to the white-on-grey task count badges that you used up through build 140. The current design is much more difficult for me to read.
Thanks!

+1 for going back to wildcard search. I prefer not to think about whether I have to start with something specific when searching. I just want to: search.

Love the drop downs anything that keeps the UI cleaner is great to me!

I like the new menus because they keep things clean but at the same time I wish it could be implemented in a faster way.
My eyes don't have to look all over the place for different things like due date, scheduled, etc, but it takes too many clicks to assign things now.
hmmm.

@Proximo: I'm shocked that you, of all people, is NOT complaining about the lack of keyboard access to so many of the options...
Am I the only one who cares about this?!

@Alex,
I think keyboard hot keys are very important. I would love hot keys for assigning time, energy and context quickly but at the moment I am more focused on the usability of the UI.
I think keyboard hot keys are supplemental to a good UI, so I want to make sure the UI works nicely on it's own.
On my Windows 7 computer, I have zero icons on my desktop. I use Executor and launch all my applications, documents, reports and folders with keyboard hot keys.
So I am with you Alex.

I think that the drop-down menus are a bit much. More things need to be "1-clickable."
I would suggest this: http://help.nirvanahq.com/discussions/suggestions/895-suggestion-ti...
And then make assigning time and energy "1-clickable." Here's what I mean:
So when you create a new task / edit one you get a nice editing rectangle. The problem is that the far right has a WHOLE bunch of unused space which could be put to good use. I would suggest dividing that space into boxes, with each box having a specific use. For example, the "Time" box would have "L, M, H," and I could just click on it, with ONE CLICK. The "Energy" box would also have the same, and be just ONE CLICK.
The other categories could have similar implementations.
As for keyboard shortcuts, I think the RTM / GMail route is best. Make it so that each task is selectable, and then have certain hotkeys designated to certain edits. So "j" and "k" would go up and down, "i" or "x" to select tasks, and then "c" to complete. This seems to be the most commonly method for keyboard shortcuts, and would also facilitate multi-editing. Basically this is moving to the paradigm of checkboxes to select, rather than checkboxes to complete.

+1 for Gregory suggestions - one clicks everywhere would make a very productive app for those who still prefer not to use keyboard shortcuts

+1 on Gregory's idea

Ok. Now that more and more feature are percolating up to the app (recurring tasks, mobile app filters, UNL - great month Nirvana development team!), I want to revive this discussion of the N2 GUI features that need to be cleaned up..
I agree with the OP - it's critical to "dig-out" a lot of options that got buried under menus in N2. Primary among these to me is "Scheduled". That's the single most important field for me and it's pretty annoying that is had been buried behind so many click: "Next/Scheduled/Start Date". It should be right there on the main entry menu between "time" and "due" (and for those users who inevitably get confused about the difference between "scheduled" and "due" you can have a pop-up or context "help" that describes the difference in a pithy sentence (we can help write it - Proximo has already done so in many forum posts).
And +1 on Gregory's GUI ideas too.
Nirvana is getting closer and closer to fulfilling its name... :-)

Just wanted to let you know we are following and adding items to the list.
Elbert & I have talked a few times about things like customizable short-cut keys and display elements.
Keep the ideas coming.
Thanks,
David
